Day 1, Chapter 15.1, Picture the End, Wissant 2012-20. First occurred during Being Boucalais 1.0, September 2012.
Arriving on top of the wooden stairs that connect the beach with the dike of Wissant we look back and take a picture of the beach with its scattered German bunkers dating from the Second World War. The blockhouses used to stand in the dunes, but over 7 decades the shoreline receded and left the bunkers sinking into the sand.
mod.i: On the 19th of March 2007 the dike of Wissant got partly destroyed by a storm during high water, the sea entered the streets of the village and houses had to be evacuated. The construction of the new barrier finished in 2015.
mod.re: In 2013 the bunkers were crumbled into pieces and removed from the beach, being replaced by rows of wooden stakes to protect the dunes. By 2016 the dunes had receded almost 20 meters after a series of storms. The wooden stairs were partly erased and rendered unusable.
