At the mouth of the river Zwalm in Nederzwalm-Hermelgem a 21-meter- high dam is constructed. The work will take years and create hundreds of jobs. Once the engineering structure has been completed, the level of the Zwalm will rise slowly over the years. The residents will be gradually evacuated and compensated for the move.
This dam will eventually create an artificial lake that will stimulate water tourism in the region.
