9 August 1993, at the day of the coronation of Albert 2, they tried to get a free ride on the Brussels metro system and were caught by the police. When asked to give them a name they came up with Bernard Leroy (i),(r).
Bren Leroy (°1975, Mississauga, Canada) is an artist who mainly works in the field of performance/activism.
By creating situations and breaking the passivity of the spectator, Leroy want the viewer to become part of the art as a kind of added component. Art is activism: to be able to interact with a world in distress through their art is important. Their performances demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tell a story about the effects of global domination by a few corporations on recent history. They challenge the authority we generally accept as ‘civilised’, and ‘democratic’.
By questioning and undoing seemingly hard-cultured mechanisms (B.L.F.) into a new chaotic universe, They use a visual vocabulary ( Wars, I Ate ...) that addresses many different ecological and political issues. Eco-installations as Brave Little Forest and their interest in the project WasteLand make them a proponent for environmental and sustainable solutions in Urban areas.
Bren Leroy currently live and work in Mississauga.
