ARTIST WANTED

Are you an art student? Various Artists want to be your assistants for a full academic term (2021 - 2022), one day a week, free of charge. Please contact various.artists@me.com before March 21, 2021.

 ARTIST WANTED is a long term performative installation. It involves the collaboration of a yet to be confirmed art student.

The project questions the status of the artist in the 21st century with its neoliberal hold on the art market. Imagine an art market where the student is considered a product or a future investment. Just like the young footballer who is already under contract with a club, an art student has already a deal with a gallery.

ARTIST WANTED dates back to 1998 when Various Artists assisted Cildo Meireles for a show in New York. Meireles suggested VA to print a business card with ARTIST WANTED to attract new artists to assist. The card was printed but never used.

More than 20 years later Various Artists want to bring this project alive as wel as conceptually reversing it. The idea is that for a full academic term Various Artists with all it's members would assist an arts student (a future artist) for one day per week. This would come at no cost to the student.

The call

Various Artists invite all Belgian art schools to participate as well as individual art students. After making contact, a first round of meetings will be organized. The six final chosen students will show a work in a group exhibition in n0dine Brussels. During this show a random choice to determine the finalist will be made.

The assistance

During the entire academic period, Various Artists will assist the student conceptually, practically and during production one day a week. The assistance can be carried out in the student's studio, at school or even in the Various Artists studio.

The final show

At the end of the academic term the student and Various Artists will present a duo show also known as a Q&A in n0dine Brussels.
