Cut up banknotes.
When Various Artists started presenting themselves as formula-driven entities, the cut-up/erased/shredded works were produced. As every Various uses a different set of tools, multiple approaches to the idea of adding value through the destruction of something valuable emerged. From the abrasive treatment of banknotes, via cut-ups, burning, washing, and shredding to the production of new paper. As a typical opposition to this way of working are the propositions by MdL (Morice de Lisle), the absolute destruction of value is to negate its initial intended value. The “Not for Sale” banknote and its evolutions: the “Sample”, “Specimen”, “VOID”, “CANCELED” and “SALE” banknotes. Finally, a more playful variation added by LIB (Lima Drib) is the series of “Unclaimed Lottery Tickets” made for Camino Welt / Boucalais - to walk as a virtual millionaire.
